Getting Close-Up

My Creative Workout - Creating Cool Images by Getting Up-Close
One of my favorite things to do with my camera, whether it’s my DSLR or my iPhone, is to take close-up pictures of everyday things. It could be an object like a household utensil, a texture like graffiti on a concrete wall, or something from nature like leaves on a tree.

To take these photos I use a macro lens on both my DSLR and my iPhone (check out my resources page for more details). This allows me to get really close which can create interesting effects when combined with a shallow depth of field. This also gives me the opportunity to examine something closely and experiment with different angles and points of view in an effort to make something that’s considered ordinary become much more interesting. The end result can often be a pretty amazing abstract image. [Read more…]

Creativity Before Yard Work

Brant Rock Beach - Photo by Mark Chisholm - My Creative Workout
It was a beautiful Sunday morning. Before I got too deep into the never-ending to-do list, I decided that it was more important for me to get off my ass and shoot some pictures. I just finished my morning coffee and I knew I had the luxury of a little bit of free time. Changing It Up

My Creative Workout Logo Mock Up
I found this graphic that I created some time ago, when I was in the early stages of creating this website. At that time I was experimenting with different directions that I wanted to take My Creative Workout. I really love the retro look of this logo treatment and seeing it again has motivated me to embark on a journey to changing the graphic identity of this website. Back when I started, I decided to build My Creative Workout as a self-hosted WordPress site. I went with the Genesis Framework from StudioPress and chose the Modern Studio Pro Theme with very few changes to the out-of-the-box design. Now, I’ve decided that it’s time to move beyond the stock look and feel of the Modern Studio Pro theme and dig much deeper into WordPress and CSS. Over the coming weeks and months I’ll be making changes to the design of this site. Some changes will be subtle, while others will be much more apparent. My hope is that the end result will be something that really represents what I’ve always had in mind for My Creative Workout.
